Biological Soil and Compost Assay: Sampling Instructions

Potting Soil Sampling Guidelines
  1. Collect Samples:

    • Take at least three small samples per pot or bed.
    • Use gloves, scrape back any mulch, and remove the top 2–3 cm of soil.
    • Collect a small handful of soil (approximately a quarter to half a handful) from each spot.
  2. Combine and Package:

    • Mix the samples thoroughly in a clean container.
    • Place 250–500 ml of the mixed soil into a sealable plastic bag, leaving the bag half-full of air to allow microbes to breathe.
    • Label the outside of the bag with your name and a reference (e.g., Indoor Bed 1, Outdoor Bed 2).
  3. Important Notes:

    • Avoid placing paper or other materials inside the bag as they can act as microbial food.
    • Post the sample using a next-day delivery service to the address provided once your order is placed.
    • Notify us via email or phone and include the tracking number if available.

Compost Sampling Guidelines
  1. Collect Samples:

    • For small compost batches: Take at least 5 teaspoon-sized samples from just below the surface, avoiding dry or outer material.
    • For large compost windrows: Collect a minimum of 20 samples from different areas and mix thoroughly.
  2. Combine and Package:

    • Place the mixed compost into a sealable plastic bag, filling it halfway to leave room for air circulation.
    • Label the bag with the batch identification and the date of sampling.
  3. Important Notes:

    • Do not include any paper or foreign material in the bag, as it may feed microbes and alter results.
    • Send the sample via next-day delivery service and notify us with the tracking number if applicable.
